Challenge:
Since 1995, the Delta Flight Museum has allowed visitors from around the world to explore aviation history, celebrate the story and people of Delta Air Lines, and discover the future of flight. Standing in the heart of the airline’s headquarters in Atlanta, the 68,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art attraction makes for an engaging outing for family, friends, school groups and more. The Delta Flight Museum is housed in Delta's original 1940s-era aircraft hangars in Atlanta.
The challenge for the Delta Flight Museum is to continue to attract and excite visitors of all ages and bring the exhibits to life in new and exciting ways. While engagement is paramount, the challenge for the museum was also to keep overall costs lower and to avoid extensively physical location or infrastructure changes.
Solution:
Beginning in January 2022, the Delta Flight Museum began offering its visitors a new and exciting way to interact with the museum’s iconic aircraft. After downloading the Delta Flight Museum app (available at both the AppStore and GooglePlay) to their smart phones, visitors can activate experiences at eight augmented reality triggers positioned throughout the museum. These experiences include:
Seeing and hearing a pilot, a mechanic, a stewardess and a traveler describe the features and historical significance of our Douglas DC-3, Ship 41
Exploring a re-creation of the historical interior of our newly installed Douglas DC-7B, Ship 717;
Watching as the Delta Douglas DC-7B takes flight;
Finding informational points on The Spirit of Delta that explain why our Boeing B767 was the height of jet technology in 1982 and more.
These augmented reality (AR) experiences provide compelling interpretive overlays that complement the Delta Flight Museum’s interactive displays. Delta Flight Museums’ Curation and Exhibits Manager, Timothy Frilingos, developed this project in partnership with 3D content studio TRICK 3D to provide a greater immersive experience.
